Pay peanuts, get gurus

4 December 2009 3 Comments

Well, it has finally happened. You guru’s have  overexposed yourself and look what has happened…

SEEK - Digital Marketing Officer Job in Brisbane_1259824750808

Gurus for sale at $40K a pop.

But on a serious note, there are a number of vacancies at the moment to start or develop the “digital culture” in a variety of industries. Money’s not everything but can often be an indication of the value placed on digital thinking. I’d be asking some very serious questions about a role such as this.

    Nathan. Good find.
Money talks and this says a whole bunch about the value placed on what Thomson Adsett believe their digital/ social comms strategy and implementation is worth. They are destined to fill the role with a young, inexperienced graduate with limited (if any) real world experience. And if the successful candidate is ‘into it’ then sure they’ll be very able to mouth words like ‘authentic two way communication’, ‘transparency’ and ‘integrated transmedia approach’ but chances are they won’t have the experience to deftly develop, build and manage a social media community and all the activities that go with this, nor most probably will they be able to influence Thomson Adsett Management to understand that Social Media is not simply a function but a whole of business approach. #FAIL.
We’ve just written a post about this that captures some key thoughts about managing social media strategy and development. The link is below.

Wow,hold your horses. I think you’ll find this was a simple typo error. They meant to say over paid child labour. Happens to me all the time. Meanwhile, did you get the email and phone from this ad? I’d like to apply looks like a great opportunity to grow.

@ Kevin – Steve makes some great points in there. I especially like the point that you “can’t leave social media to the kids”. It’s not necessarily a young game, it’s basic relationship laws of real life delivered in a new way. In many respects, older more life experienced folk would deliver greater value here. The technology is the easy bit!

@ Jaimee – good luck! I think you’ll do great.
