Is Your Brand A Twitter Friend or Twitter Fail?

14 August 2009 4 Comments

This morning I popped my head into Friend or Follow which is a website which shows you who follows you on Twitter and you haven’t followed back, who you’re following and don’t follow you and mutual follows.

When I looked at who wasn’t following me back (the egotistical devil on my left shoulder made me checked this first) I was surprised at what I saw..

That’s 46 brands (I’m including musicians and publications) who I have sought out but are not interested in me. They may be on Twitter but they definitely aren’t being social.

On the upside, there were 24 brands who had followed me back and many more who had sought me out. The best of these who not only connect but also interact with their followers are Cascade, Mentos, Wagamama, Dominos, Salvation Army, Sounds of Spring, TREsemme, UBank and Wotif.

I’m not sure if it is a maintenance issue, a strategic approach or naivety to online social expectations but hopefully those brands using Twitter as a broadcast medium can learn something from these interactive brand accounts.

OMG, how bad is that – yes I do believe I might be in the #fail category (although that brand shall not be named!)

But, you have shamed me into working harder following some basic principles including following followers back and interacting.

I know for me, it is simply a matter of resourcing our SM activities (no excuse), but simple things like following our followers and engaging more are now on the top of my list!

Great post by the way ;)

Good post. I have noticed this too, although Twitter glitches are a factor as twice I’ve fallen off one friend/former colleague’s following list, and been re-followed. It feels a bit naff to mention repeatedly that you’ve fallen off again.
There are some on your list of 78 who i follow and who don’t follow me back too. What’s most surprising are the one’s who I’ve had good interaction with and who don’t follow back. And some I’ve even had a drink and a laugh with.

do you find it weird that the most recent Cascade post is from June – i’m not sure if that is most most effective at broadcasting by a company to their audience…..?

@Karalee – you have redeemed yourself! Resourcing is the most common (and most excusable but not totally excusable) reason and I may have been guilty of that myself before.

@Marion – wierd isn’t it? I even went to DM one today and realised they don’t follow me back.

@Ben – nice pick up – that’s poor form. They were on a nice roll there for a while with regular tweets and interaction. Let’s hope they jump back in.
