Max Markson and Twitter Combine in Crime

2 June 2009 4 Comments

If the NSW Police were actually on Twitter (like they appeared to be) could they have prevented a crime this morning courtesy of Max Markson?

In hindsight you are correct. But if they did use it to stop crime, and it became public, then there would be so many hoaxes it isn’t funny.

Exactly! And then they'd come after you for your anti-Canberra Raiders comments.

Is it even legal to go and arrest or stalk someone pre-emptively because some guy on twitter said you were going to do something naughty?

i can't imagine it is. crime prevention is one thing, but that would mean i wold have the cops turn up at my house each time i change my facebook status to "christie is so frustrated she is going to kill someone". might be a stretch on police resources, as i tend to post such threats quite frequently!

@christie ok, ok I wasn't being serious. More of a tongue in cheek dig at both Mr.Markson and the NSW Police twitter story (hence the photo). Maybe tongue was a bit too much in cheek though.

HOWEVER, if I was being serious I reckon I could have an argument (of course I would!). If Twitter was around in the 90's and (the real) Roberta Williams gets on Twitter and says Carl is going out to take out on Jason Moran at an Essendon football club tomorrow morning, you'd take that threat seriously right? Even despite it was on Twitter because you know it's a good chance it is a real threat. Same in this case. We knew Spiderman loves to climb buildings, was in Sydney and is a client of Max Markson – very good chance it is going to happen!
