A Merry Homeless Christmas

10 December 2008 2 Comments

The other day my friend Katherine was listening to her iPod while waiting for a bus to work. Out of the blue, a homeless man reached out and presented her with a Christmas card. This is it:

From what I can see, it reads:

“All best… fun week… ipod music… all best 2009… thankyou ted”

It is then rounded off with a personalised drawing of Katherine with headphones in.

Throughout the week I’ve been whinging and bitching about clients not slowing down leading up to Christmas, having to go Christmas shopping all weekend and obligations to make arrangements to see family and family before the break. This put all that into perspective.

To hear of a homeless person who is dedicated to spreading Christmas cheer and goodwill made me take a step back and enjoy Christmas for what it is. A time to spend time with people who are the most important to you, a time to relax and a time to celebrate.

But most importantly for me this year is to be thankful and appreciative. In a year that has not been kind to many people, little gestures of hope and goodwill have the potential to make a big difference to those who may not have it as good as me. So, if you get the opportunity, buy a Big Issue, purchase a meal for someone who looks like they need it or simply smile and wish someone a Merry Christmas. Enjoy.
